COMMONWEALTH
GAMES 2026 PREVIEW
Glasgow welcomes Commonwealth athletes for a sustainable summer sporting spectacle
T
he 2026 Commonwealth Games will return to
Scotland as the city of Glasgow hosts the XXIII
Commonwealth Games from 23 July to 2
August 2026. Twelve years after staging a highly
successful edition in 2014, Glasgow is once again
preparing to welcome around 3,000 athletes from 74
Commonwealth nations and territories for 11 days of
world-class sporting action.
Unlike previous editions, Glasgow 2026 has been
designed as a more compact and sustainable event.
Following the withdrawal of the original host, Victoria
in Australia, Glasgow stepped in to deliver a
streamlined Games using many existing venues and
facilities. Competition will be concentrated across four
main venues within an eight-mile corridor, bringing
spectators closer to the action while reducing costs
and environmental impact.
The Games will feature a 10-sport programme,
including athletics, swimming, artistic gymnastics,
track cycling, netball, boxing, judo, bowls,
weightlifting and 3x3 basketball. Para sport will once
again be fully integrated into the schedule, with
Glasgow set to host the largest Para sport medal
programme in Commonwealth Games history. More
than 200 gold medals will be contested across the
competition.
Home nations athletes are expected to be among the
stars of the Games, while traditional sporting
powerhouses such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand
and England will once again compete fiercely for
medal success.
With a passionate sporting culture, proven
infrastructure and enthusiastic crowds, Glasgow 2026
promises to deliver memorable performances and a
vibrant celebration of sport. Although smaller in scale
than recent editions, the Games are expected to
showcase the very best of Commonwealth
competition while demonstrating a new, more
sustainable model for the future.
