THE GOLF OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP
2025 PREVIEW
F
rom 17–20 July 2025, the world’s finest golfers will
descend upon Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern
Ireland as The Open Championship returns to the
stunning Dunluce Links for just the third time in its history.
Last played here in 2019, when Shane Lowry lifted the Claret
Jug amid roaring home support, the championship is set
for another captivating chapter on the rugged Antrim coast.
Royal Portrush’s notoriously demanding layout, shaped by
undulating fairways and punishing rough, promises a stern
examination of skill, patience and creativity. There were
rumours of the organisers removing the out-of-bounds area
on the first hole, which would have eased the nerves of
players like Rory McIlroy, who famously stumbled there in
2019, but this is unlikely to happen.
McIlroy will no doubt be among the headline names. Now
the reigning Masters champion after finally completing his
career Grand Slam earlier this year, the Northern Irishman
returns to a venue where he famously shot a recordbreaking 61 as a teenager. Local support and course
familiarity could play in his favour.
World number one Scottie Scheffler arrives in dominant
form, having secured several notable victories in 2025,
including the PGA Championship. He’ll be joined by a
formidable group of challengers including reigning Open
champion Xander Schauffele, Jon Rahm, and former winner
Collin Morikawa. Ireland’s own Shane Lowry will also be
keen to repeat his Portrush triumph.
Emerging stars such as Ludvig Åberg and Rasmus
Højgaard are expected to make their presence felt, while
the field – drawn from both major exemptions and
qualifying series events – ensures a global mix of talent and
experience.
Fans can look forward to extensive live coverage via Sky
Sports Golf and The R&A’s digital platforms. For those lucky
enough to attend in person, the event offers not only
elite-level golf but also panoramic views of one of the UK’s
most picturesque coastlines.
As we enter July, anticipation builds for a spectacular week
at Portrush – where history, pressure and passion collide
once again in the quest for the Claret Jug.
