THE COSY LIVING
ROOM UPGRADE
Create a warmer, stylish living room
ready for autumn evenings
A
s October arrives and evenings become
noticeably darker, the living room once
again becomes the heart of family life.
Summer evenings in the garden give way
to films, reading, games and relaxed
weekends indoors, making this an
ideal time to give the space a
thoughtful seasonal refresh.
A cosy living room does not
have to mean simply adding
blankets and candles.
With carefully chosen
improvements to lighting,
storage, flooring and focal
features, homeowners can
create a room that feels
warmer and more luxurious
while also strengthening the
overall appeal of the property.
CREATE A STRONG FOCAL POINT
Every successful living room benefits from a clear focal
point. In many homes, this may already be a fireplace,
making autumn the perfect time to give it renewed
attention.
Refreshing an existing
surround, replacing
a dated mantel
or simply
repainting
the
chimney breast can dramatically alter the character of
the room. Where there is no fireplace, a stylish media
wall, statement artwork or beautifully designed shelving
can provide the same sense of structure.
The aim is to create something that immediately draws
the eye while helping the room feel considered and
complete.
LAYER THE LIGHTING
Lighting becomes particularly important as daylight
hours shorten. Rather than relying on one central
ceiling light, introduce several sources at different
heights to create a softer and more welcoming
atmosphere.
Table lamps beside sofas, floor lamps in reading corners
and wall lights around shelving can all add warmth
while making the room more practical for different
activities. Choosing warm white bulbs rather than
cooler tones can further soften the overall appearance.
Dimmer controls are another useful addition, allowing
brighter light for busy family moments and a more
relaxed setting later in the evening.
INTRODUCE STYLISH STORAGE
Family living rooms need to work hard, often
accommodating books, toys, technology and everyday
belongings alongside more decorative pieces.
Built in cabinetry can provide a particularly elegant
solution, combining cupboards for concealed storage
with open shelving for photographs, books and
accessories. Bespoke storage around a fireplace or
television can also make use of alcoves that might
otherwise remain underused.
For a more modest update,
attractive baskets, sideboards
and storage ottomans can
achieve much of the same
effect while keeping the
room tidy and organised.
REFRESH FLOORS
AND FURNISHINGS
The arrival of colder
weather naturally
encourages richer
textures and warmer
materials. A large rug can
instantly make hard flooring
